What is sgot ast?

SGOT (aspartate aminotransferase) and AST (serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) are interchangeable terms for a liver enzyme that is found in high levels in several organs, including the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and skeletal muscles.

The SGOT/AST test is a blood test that measures the levels of the SGOT enzyme in the bloodstream. Elevated levels of the SGOT enzyme in the bloodstream can indicate damage to the liver, heart, or other organs. However, the specific organ causing the elevation in SGOT levels cannot be determined just by looking at the SGOT/AST test result.

SGOT/AST levels can be elevated in a variety of conditions such as liver inflammation, viral hepatitis, liver damage due to alcohol use, drug toxicity, liver cirrhosis, heart attack, and muscle damage.

While the SGOT/AST test can be helpful in diagnosing liver disease, it is important to note that it is just one of many diagnostic tools and should be used in conjunction with other tests and clinical evaluations.
